About Lebo M

Grammy-award winner, Tony nominated producer and songwriter, UK’s Ivor Novello songwriter’s winner, two SAMA award-winner, UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador 2010/11, philanthropist, businessman and father, Lebohang Morake, also known as Lebo M wears various hats but is commonly known worldwide as “The voice and spirit of THE LION KING”. A native of South Africa, Lebo M was first recognized as the only African working on Disney’s smash feature film and musical sensation, “The Lion King”.

In 2006 he realized his life-long dream of bringing The Lion Kind stage production home to Africa, so that his countrymen and women could share the magic and splendour of this phenomenally successful production on home soil.

Lebo M co-produced the Lion Kind South Africa as lead producer, with Pieter Toerien. Shattering all local theatre records, The Lion King South Africa was seen by over 550 000 people in South Africa and over 75 million people around the world with a worldwide gross earnings of over $6.2 billion in 2014. Ironically, it was Lebo M that brought the insatiable spirit of Nelson Mandela’s endurance of a 27- year prison sentence to rule his country, through the music that told the same story about a lion returning to Pride Rock.

From Humble Beginnings

After an oppressive childhood in the notorious township of Soweto, it’s no mistake that this profound story of overcoming became an entire body of work for Lebo M. Driven by his larger than life ambitions and dreams, the then 9 year old boy performing in township nightclubs soon found himself in Los Angeles, where he begged on street corners, cleaned church floors, worked at well-known establishments to finally landing on the doorstep of Quincy Jones, famed Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer and Disney.

In 2009 Lebo M brought spectacle and showmanship to the FIFA Confederations Cup as an Executive Creative Director which entailed that he co-produce the opening and closing ceremonies of the 200 FIFA Confederations Cup held in South Africa. The ceremonies featured a cast of over 1000 artists and were broadcast to a global television audience.

2010 sees Lebo M continuing to draw on his creative forces to Co-Executive produce the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He was also appointed a UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador to add his persona to the campaign to reduce HIV infections and AIDS in the world. Lebo M is critically acclaimed for his creation of some of the most moving and resonant music to pass the ears of modern audiences. He is deftly talented at putting together an incredibly rich menagerie of voices, chants, instruments and melody.
